In 2016, Flavor Waves partnered with Q & A Research to conduct a study to learn about the ever changing trends in consumer flavored coffee preferences. This study was conducted again in 2018 and 2020 growing to include preferences among tea drinking consumers.
The most wonderful fact about all these trends, and survey studies, is that we have already gone through the screening process of first identifying true flavored coffee and flavored tea consumers. Thus, the trend information is even more accurate and not extrapolated based on estimates of a percentage of flavored coffee or flavored tea sales vs. total coffee and tea sales.
Flavor Waves was interested in conducting the study in 2022 to measure any changes in consumer preferences and behaviors. The main objective of the research was to understand coffee and tea usage and preferences, as well as seasonal flavor trends.
More specifically, this research aimed to identify: Most appealing flavors, Flavored coffee/tea drinking behaviors, Flavored coffee/tea purchasing tendencies, Knowledge of artificial ingredients in flavored coffee/tea, Cold-brewing trends for coffee and Interest in Kombucha.
Hot and Iced Tea Flavors of Interest: Year Round
When asked what flavors of hot tea consumers prefer year round, the top mentions were Lemon and Green Tea. Chamomile and Black Tea also ranked highly.
• One interesting insight we gathered from the survey was Peach Tea moved down on the list significantly from previous years.

Iced Tea remains the leading type of flavored tea purchased for restaurant consumption. Refreshing citrus and berry flavors remain popular for iced tea flavors among consumers. Lemon was the leading flavor for iced tea.

Flavored tea drinkers consume about 5 cups of flavored tea a week; mostly hot, caffeinated tea. The time of day tea is consumed varies greatly.
